A Lifeline of Care: Hemodialysis Unit in Leh, UT Ladakh

Hemodialysis at SNM

Introduction:

The establishment of a Hemodialysis Unit at the District Hospital SNM Leh, under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP), has been a game-changer for the healthcare system in Ladakh since its Inauguration on 27th December 2018.

The Journey Towards Accessibility:

Before the advent of the Hemodialysis Unit, Ladakh faced the challenge of limited healthcare resources, particularly for patients in need of Hemodialysis treatment. Previously, patients had no option but to travel long distances to cities like Delhi or Chandigarh, away from their homes, to access Haemodialysis facilities. The added burden of accommodation and travel costs made the situation even more challenging for these patients and their families.

The Genesis of a Boon:

The Hemodialysis Unit, a product of collective efforts, demonstrates the power of collaboration between the Health Department Ley UT Ladakh and other entities. The Health Department procured four Hemodialysis Units, further enhanced by the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Indian Oil Corporation, which generously provided two dialysis units. Additionally, a heartening act of philanthropy came from Mr. Tsewang Thinley S/O Ishey Stanzin R/O Thiksey , who along with few other donors donated one unit of Haemodialysis Machine, exemplifying the impact of individual contributions to society.

Leading with Expertise and Compassion:

At the heart of this medical triumph stands Dr. Tashi Thinles, a renowned physician with over two decades of dedicated service to the people of Ladakh. Assisted by his dedicated paramedic staff, led by Mr. Tsering Sonam Incharge of the Unit, the Hemodialysis Unit has proven to be a lifeline for individuals battling chronic renal failure and emergency cases of acute renal failure. The team's unwavering dedication, sincerity, and compassion have played a vital role in saving precious lives and providing a sense of security to those in need.

Changing Lives, One Session at a Time:

The impact of the Haemodialysis Unit can be seen through the data of the past three years. The number of Haemodialysis sessions conducted speak volumes: 1000 dialysis sessions for 27 patients from April 2020 – March 2021, 955 sessions for 26 patients from April 2021 – March 2022, and 1417 sessions for 41 patients from April 2022 – March 2023 & 432 sessions for 25 patients since March 2023 till date. These numbers reflect not just statistical data but the improved quality of life for numerous individuals in Ladakh with Kidney failure.

Inclusivity and Support through PMNDP and PMJAY :

An important aspect of the Hemodialysis Unit's success lies in its registration on the PMNDP Portal ,which enables all patients to receive free Hemodialysis under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).This inclusive initiative has alleviated the financial burden of affected families, allowing them to access timely treatment without financial constraints and leaving their native region.

A Collaborative Effort:

The success of the Hemodialysis Unit owes much to the unwavering support from the Health and Medical Education Department ,UT Ladakh Directorate Health Services , UT Ladakh and Health Department Leh .

Dr. Tsewang Chorol, the Medical Superintendent of SNM Hospital Leh, has left no stone unturned in ensuring the Haemodialysis Unit proper upkeep and efficiency to excellence and relentless pursuit of optimal patient care.

Conclusion:

The Hemodialysis Unit in Ladakh exemplifies the transformative power of healthcare initiatives, addressing critical needs and uplifting the region's healthcare system. By bringing advanced medical facilities closer to home, Health Department Leh has taken a significant step in providing better healthcare access for the people. As the Hemodialysis Unit continues to save lives and improve the well-being of Ladakhis, it serves as a testament to the potential of collective action in creating positive change for society.
