A Triumph in Oral Maxillofacial Surgical Excellence at SNM Hospital, Leh
In a remarkable display of expertise, Dr. Aaquib Nazir, MDS - Oral Maxillofacial Surgery & Fellowship Cleft & CranioMaxillofacial & Reconstructive Surgery, appointed as Dental Surgeon under NHM Ladakh led a successful Oral Maxillofacial surgery at SNM Hospital, Leh. Collaborating with Dr. Rinchen Dolma and Dr. Yangchan Dolma Consultants, Department of Anaesthesiology,SNM Hospital,Leh , along with the dedicated OT team, they undertook a challenging case of trauma involving a fracture of the symphysis and left body of the mandible.
The patient presented a unique difficulty, being unable to fully close his mouth, amplifying the complexity of the surgical intervention. The procedure unfolded in two settings, showcasing the multidisciplinary approach adopted by the medical team.
Under local anaesthesia, the first setting involved Upper & Lower Arch Bar fixation, complemented by pre-surgery elastic traction. This preliminary step aimed to create a conducive environment for the subsequent intricate phase of the surgery.
In the second setting, Scarless Intra-Oral Open Reduction & Internal Fixation was done under General Anaesthesia , marking a pivotal moment in the case's resolution.
Notably, the patient's condition posed a challenge for the Anaesthesiology team, as the Mallampati Grade IV classification of the patient indicated an anticipated difficult airway.
Demonstrating their proficiency, an awake fiberoptic intubation by Dr Rinchen Dolma & Dr Yangchan Dolma Consultant Anesthesiologists. They successfully executed, ensuring a smooth surgery . The post-operative period unfolded without any complications, attesting to the meticulous planning and execution of the surgery.
Traditionally, cases of this nature would be referred to higher centers for treatment in the past. However, this successful surgery at SNM Hospital highlights a significant milestone in the upgradation of health services in Leh. The collaborative efforts of the NHM, Health & Medical Education Department, and the Administration of UT Ladakh have played a pivotal role in transforming SNM Hospital into a center of excellence for intricate oral maxillofacial surgeries.
