In a significant stride towards enhancing healthcare services in UT Ladakh by Health and Medical Education Department, Administration of UT Ladakh ,the Urology Department at SNM Hospital Leh has emerged as a beacon of hope for patients in need of specialized urological care. Prior to the establishment of this department, individuals requiring urology treatment had to travel long distances to cities like Delhi or Chandigarh. However, thanks to the appointment of Dr. Nawaz Ali MS.Mch Urology through the National Health Mission (NHM), the residents of UT Ladakh can now access high-quality urological services right at home.


A Testament to Progress:

Dr Tsewang Chorol, the medical superintendent of SNM Hospital, diligently provides data of surgeries/procedures conducted by the Urology Department since Jan 2023 that underscores that remarkable impact of the hospital’s efforts in urology patient care.

Procedures done in urology (since January 2023)

A) Endoscopic procedures

1. TURP (Transurethral resection of prostrate) 6

2. TURBT (Transurethral resection of bladder tumour) 18

3. OIU (Optical internal urethrotomy) 12

4. Urethral dilatation (Endoscopic guided) >20

5. Diagnostic CPE & Ureteroscopy >30 (Routinely done as a part of disease evaluation)

6. Ureteric DJ stenting (emergency & palliative) >15

B) Open procedures

1. Nephrectomy 2 cases (38-year-old female & 8-year-old male child)

2. Pyelolithotomy 5 cases

3. Ureterolithotomy 3 cases

4. Open Cystolithotomy 1 case

5. Right inguinal orchidectomy with mesh hernioplasty (Adult UDT) 1 case

6. PV Sac ligation (paediatric hydrocele) 2 cases

7. Preputioplasty/ circumcision (ritual & pathological ) / Jaboulay’s procedure (for scrotal hydrocele) >10 cases

C) USG guided procedures

1. PCN (percutaneous nephrostomy) 5 cases

2. SPC (suprapubic cystostomy) 2 cases


Under the support of the Health and Medical Education Department of UT Ladakh, as well as the Directorate of Health Services, the urology department at SNM Hospital Leh has been steadily expanding its capabilities.
